“Happiness, true happiness, is an inner quality. It is a state of mind. If your mind is at peace, you are happy. If your mind is at peace, but you have nothing else, you can be happy. If you have everything the world can give – pleasure, possessions, power – but lack peace of mind, you can never be happy.” ~ Dada Vaswani
As time passes by and the more familiar I become with who I really am underneath it all, the more I realize how important it is to be at peace with yourself and the world around you; how important it is to do the things that nurture your mind, revitalize your body and rejuvenate your Soul.
I often look around me at how most people live their lives and I have to say that it saddens me. It saddens me because there are people who live as if they aren’t human BEings, but rather human DOings. They live their lives as if they are machines. Machines that need to do more, more, more… and run faster, and faster, and faster.
It’s insane…
On Being at Peace with Yourself and Your Life
We forgot how to be human. We forgot what it means to be alive, and feel alive. We forgot how to value and treasure this beautiful and precious gift that is called life. We forgot how to enjoy and make the best of the present moment, the only moment that truly exists.
We are so busy chasing after all sorts of things, things that we believe will make us happy; living in a constant state of waiting – waiting for something magical to happen, waiting for our lives to begin, that we completely ignore the present moment. Eckhart Tolle says it so beautifully in his book, The Power of Now,
“Most people treat the present moment as if it were an obstacle that they need to overcome. Since the present moment is life itself, it is an insane way to live.” ~ Eckhart Tolle
We treat the present moment as an obstacle that we need to overcome, failing to realize that the present moment is our life. This moment, this breath, this experience, this is our life is. This is where our happiness lies. This is where our peace can be found.
Why is it that we can’t seem to realize how important it is to be present? Why is it that the next moment seems to be better and more important than this one?
Why can’t we just be fully present with what is? Why can’t we just let go of our resistance and surrender to whatever we are experiencing at this moment? Why can’t we make peace with this idea that
“Life will give you whatever experience is most helpful for the evolution of your consciousness? How do you know this is the experience you need? Because this is the experience you are having at the moment.” ~ Eckhart Tolle
Why can’t we just accept that maybe everything that happens to us, no matter if good or bad, it’s all for our own growth, part of our expansion and our evolution?
We want success, a lot of money. We want people to know who we are, even though we ourselves have no clue who we are, and no matter how much stuff we accumulate, we never seem to have enough. Why is that? When is enough, enough?
Look how beautifully Dalai Lama talks about this:
“When you are discontent, you always want more, more, more. Your desire can never be satisfied. But when you practice contentment, you can say to yourself, ‘Oh yes – I already have everything that I really need.” ~ Dalai Lama
And Lao Tzu as well,
“If you realize that you have enough, you are truly rich.” ~ Lao Tzu
Be content… Be at peace.
There is this magical island in Thailand called Koh Lipe and I honestly tell you that in that place I have met the wealthiest people alive. People whom some of us might call poor just because of the conditions they live in, and because they don’t have as much money and beautiful things as some of us do.
But I am telling you, in their presence, I felt poor. And you know why? Because I realized that material possessions, money and all these things we perceive as wealthy aren’t wealthy at all.
They are just things that have no value except the one we give to them. In their presence, I realized that true wealth consists in having peace, love, joy, and bliss run through your veins.
True wealth consists in having a heart that is overflowing with love, love that is flooding the places around you, making all things and all people shine brighter and brighter. And when you have these things, then you can call yourself a wealthy person.
“It is the heart that makes a man rich. He is rich according to what he is, not according to what he has.” ~ Henry Ward Beecher
This world we live in needs its heart and Soul back. We need our hearts and Souls back. The people of this beautiful and magical planet need to start looking within themselves more, and outside themselves less. And each and every one of us needs to start caring more about feeling at peace, feeling content, feeling love and feeling alive, that we do about doing more and having more.
And if we do this, then we will all go back to feeling fully alive. We will all go back to feeling refreshed, renewed and rejuvenated, and the world around us will do the exact same thing. Because this world,
“Is not something separate from you and me; the world, society, is the relationship that we establish or seek to establish between each other. So you and I are the problems, and not the world, because the world is the projection of ourselves, and to understand the world we must understand ourselves. That world is not separate from us; we are the world, and our problems are the world’s problems.” ~ Jiddu Krishnamurti
The world is not separate from us; we are the world and the world is us. The world is you and me, the world is not separate from you and me. We are the world and the world is in us. The world is us.
