40 Meaningful Questions to Calm the Mind and Improve Your Focus

Asking the right questions is often the answer.

In a recent email newsletter I wrote, ā€œCalm your mind today. Donā€™t just think outside the box; think like there is no box.ā€

And to my surprise, 97 people quoted that line and responded with the same general question: ā€œHow?ā€

Iā€™ve spent the morning thinking about how to answer their collective question in the most universal way possible, and Iā€™ve decided that the simplest explanation I can give is this: Ask yourself better questions ā€” questions that (moreā€¦)

10 Hard Things We Should All Do for Ourselves More Often

Even when the struggle is real, remind yourself that it feels better to be exhausted from taking small steps forward, than it does to be tired of doing nothing.

In 1911 two explorers, Amundsen and Scott, embarked on a race against each other to become the first known human being to set foot upon the southernmost point of Earth. It was the age of Antarctic exploration, as the South Pole represented one of the last uncharted areas in the world. Amundsen wished to plant the Norwegian flag there on behalf of his country, while Scott hoped to stake his claim for England.

The journey there and back from their base camps was about 1,400 miles, which is roughly equivalent to a round-trip hike from New York City to Chicago. Both men would be traveling the same exact distance on foot through extremely cold and harsh weather conditions. And both men were equally equipped with experience, supplies, and a supporting team of fellow explorers. But what wasnā€™t certain is how each of them would approach the inevitable challenges they faced on the road ahead.

As it turned out, Amundsen and Scott took entirely different approaches to the very same challenges.

Scott directed his team to hike as far as possible on the good weather days and then rest on bad weather days to conserve energy. Conversely, Amundsen directed his team to follow a strict regimen of consistent daily progress by hiking exactly 20 miles every day, regardless of weather conditions. Even on the warmest, clear-sky days, when Amundsenā€™s team was capable of hiking much farther, Amundsen was absolutely adamant that they travel no more than 20 miles to conserve their energy for the following dayā€™s hike.

Which team succeeded in the end?

10 Mindful Ways to Remain Calm When Others Seem Out of Control

You canā€™t calm the storm. What you can do is calm yourself, and the storm will gradually pass.

Over the past decade, thereā€™s a way of being Iā€™ve gradually been cultivating in myself ā€” Iā€™ve been taming my tendency to get riled up and argue with people when their behavior doesnā€™t match my expectations.

As human beings we all have an idea in our heads about how things are supposed to be, and sadly this is what often messes us up the most. We get frustrated when things donā€™t play out the way we expect them to, and when people donā€™t behave like theyā€™re ā€œsupposedā€ to. We expect our family to act a certain way, our friends to always be kind, and strangers to be less difficult.

And when reality hits us, and everyone seems to be doing the opposite of what we expect them to do, we get triggered ā€” anger, frustration, arguments, tears, etc.

If you can relate in any way at all right now, itā€™s time to remind yourself of the truth: (moreā€¦)
